Social Responsibility Group

St Mark's members hold up a 'Christians against the cuts' banner outside Sheffield Town HallSt Mark’s Social Responsibility Group (SRG) brings together members of the congregation who see their Christian commitment as embracing social action. It monitors developments in the parish and more widely and considers ways in which the church can respond. It meets four or five times a year.

SRG takes a special interest in the Broomhall part of the parish which is ethnically very diverse and in which a significant number of people face economic deprivation.

SRG’s activities in recent years have included:

  • campaigning on behalf of a Zimbabwean asylum-seeking family within the congregation who were threatened with deportation to Malawi;
  • organising a hustings event in the 2010 General Election;
  • overseeing St Mark’s successful bid to renew its eco-congregation status;
  • suggesting a seminar on the church’s response to civil partnerships;
  • considering how St Mark’s should mark  Poverty and Homelessness Week and Racial Justice Sunday;
  • organising an event to consider how local churches could best discharge their responsibilities to the people of Broomhill and Broomhall.
