Faith and Justice Group

St Mark's members hold up a 'Christians against the cuts' banner outside Sheffield Town Hall

St Mark’s Faith and Justice Group brings together members of the St Mark’s congregation and wider partners who see their Christian commitment as embracing social action. It monitors developments in the parish of Broomhill and Broomhall and more widely and considers ways in which the church can respond. Its remit includes

  • Strategic oversight of different Social Action Groups (see below)
  • Prioritising areas of work across different groups
  • Theological support for those involved in social action
  • Resources and training for those involved in social action
  • Appropriate links with partners in Churches Together in Broomhill and Broomhall (CTBB) and other agencies, including non-church groups such as Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS)
  • A whole-Church inclusion (equality and diversity) brief

Current Social Action Groups include:

Facilitator: Jenny Carpenter

  • Poverty action, including tax justice, government cuts and homelessness

Facilitator: Joe Forde and Margaret Stone

Facilitator: Sue Hammersley

Facilitator: Rick Hughes

The Faith and Justice Group also works with other groups engaged in the faith and justice agenda locally, including:

The Group is responsible for reviewing the parish’s faith and justice strategy by:

  • Creating a log of congregational involvement in social justice work, whether or not organised through St Mark’s
  • Carrying out a skills and needs audit of the congregation and parish
  • Planning a whole-Church engagement with targeted areas through the development of new Social Action Groups
  • Reviewing existing groups to ensure they are still able to operate effectively

All meetings of the Faith and Justice Group are open to any member of St Mark’s to attend. Church members from our ecumenical partners are also very welcome.
