Trips
There are at least two student trips per year. On August bank holiday weekend, students (and others) head to Greenbelt (a largely (although not exclusively) Christian arts festival). Late September, we often retreat to the Lake District for a weekend of walking and pubbing. We are always on the look-out for new ideas, and new places to go.
Raise money for charity
St Mark’s believes that social responsibility is an important aspect of Christian life, and so as a community we support a number of charities, often through organising events. For instance, the Broomhill Festival, which happens in early June, is run largely by St Mark’s. Last June (2009) the Festival raised over £11,000 for local charities. The students play an integral part in running the Festival, from planning it throughout the year, to helping at specific events during the Festival. (See http://www.broomhillfestival.org.uk)
Soup Run
The students at St Mark's (along with other members of the congregation) serve food on Saturday evenings at Eldon St car park in the city centre, as part of the Sheffield Churches Soup Run. If you would like to be involved, please contact the office(office@stmarkssheffield.co.uk).
Conferences
St Mark's is known both nationally and internationally as a centre for open, inclusive theology. We host at least two major conferences each year, which usually sell-out. In the past we have welcomed such speakers as Robert Beckford, John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg. This autumn we will be welcoming Eley McAinsh from the Living Spirituality Network. The conferences are well-attended by students from Sheffield and beyond, and the students at St Mark's often help to steward. (See http://www.stmarkscrc.co.uk/)
