Profile: Shan Rush

Shan is the Curate at St Mark’s and began this work in July 2010. As Curate, she’s an apprentice to Ian, developing the skills she will need for her future ministry. It is envisaged that she will be ordained Priest in 2012. At present she is a Deacon, serving the Church through assisting Ian and Sue in leading Worship, administering Holy Communion and undertaking pastoral work.

Shan reads from the Gospel during the Parish EucharistShan’s ministry is non-stipendiary and she earns her living as a paediatric nurse at the Children’s Hospital, where she cares for children who need stem cell transplants for conditions that would otherwise be life limiting. She works two and a half days a week for the church and three and a half days at the hospital. This takes a bit of organizing, but since she is single she doesn’t have to juggle family commitments on a daily basis!

She is quite a whiz kid with the camera and enjoys documenting life experiences and sightseeing, at home or abroad. Not surprisingly, she has been roped in to take photographs of church activities and contribute to the magazine.

Shan is a very contented person; thoughtful and sensitive to what is required of her in all walks of life; whether it is nursing sick children or being available for those she meets at St Mark’s and elsewhere. She declares that she is conscious of her personal growth over the last few years and has found her experience of nurturing and being nurtured by the St Mark’s community rewarding, especially when it has involved sharing personal integrity, compassion and empathy.
